Bert Norman was born in Soham on 7th May 1889 (Newmarket Q2-1889 3B:562), baptised in Soham on 21st June 1889, son of John and Elizabeth Ann NORMAN (née STIMPSON) of Clay Street, Soham.

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Mill Corner, Soham with his father John NORMAN [28] labourer; his mother Elizabeth A. [27] and sister Mabel [3]. They were all born in Soham.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at The Piece, Soham, with his parents and brother Ernie [4] born Soham. His sister Mabel was a servant with butcher Edward LEONARD and his wife Emma at Owers Terrace, Soham.

1911 census... Aged 21, a farm labourer, he was at Clay Street, Soham with his parents and brother Ernest (apprentice butcher)





He enlisted in Newmarket.
Many deaths in the Balkans campaign were due to diseases such as dysentery and malaria. Lahana Cemetery was used by No.27 Casualty Clearing Station and 18th Stationary Hospital.
